Orchestra Weekend Part II: Milonga at Varsity Theater

Since the full Orchestra is already playing on Saturday, May 21 for Café Europa, we've decided to play a milonga (Tango Dance Party) on Sunday, May 22 (Bob's Birthday, and the day before Christian's Birthday!) We'll be playing at the Varsity Theater (http://www.varsitytheater.org) in Dinkytown from 8 to 10, with DJ'd music by El Turco (Burak Ozkosem, http://www.tangoshusheta.com) from 7 to 8 and from 10 to close. El Turco will also be giving a mini-lesson at 7PM for all those who are new to the Tango. My friend Randall Throckmorton (http://www.throckmusic.com) will be projecting his vintage video collages on the giant screen behind the band. And most importantly, the Orchestra will be playing with a decent piano and without a kitchen behind us. We'll be playing our old classics and a few authentic orqesta tipica arrangements that I've aquired. There will be a $10 cover charge (we will be playing for the door).

If you've never seen the new Varsity Theater, you're in for a treat! It is a 1920's Art Deco movie palace that has been refurbished to be an arts center. The seating is modular and will be configured to leave a 25x25 dance floor in front of the raised stage. Jason MacLean (who owns both the Pasta Bar and the Varsity) has re-done his magic in creating a beautifull, inspiring theatrical space.

Oh, and did I mention that there is no kitchen behind the stage?

We hope to see you there!

NOTE: for the first time in 40 months, Mandragora will not be playing their Sunday gig at the Pasta Bar. However, they are still serving food if you'd like to stop in for a bite to eat.
