A chance encounter with Maria Kalaniemi

Last Sunday, at our regular Loring Pasta Bar Milonga, I was playing a bunch of Finnish vals very poorly on the bandoneon as a Finnish friend of mine came in with 2 other Finnish ladies. Durring our break, my friend Elina came behind the stage and asked me if I knew Maria Kaleniemi. I said "Of course! She is one of the greatest accordionists on the planet! I have a bunch of her CDs." (I've always loved Scandinavian folk music almost as much as Tango!)

Elina said "Well, she's sitting over there. You should come by and say 'hi'!"

Needless to say, I put the bando away and got really nervous on the accordion!

I went over to their table and chatted for a bit. She was playing at a Scandinavian folk music festival in outstate Minnesota with her friend Maarit Kyllönen. They have an accordion/violin duo called Meiskarit. I wish I could have heard them. They said nice things about our band and seemed to enjoy their dinner.

Anyway, her label, Northside Records has posted 2 amazing MP3s that you can download and be amazed by:
